Text Scam – “Refunds” for Amazon Purchases

Scammers are impersonating Amazon again.

They will send text messages claiming they have found a problem with one of the items you have purchased. They will offer a refund if you click a link … This is a scam!

How the scam works:

You may receive an unexpected text that looks like it is from Amazon. The company claims there has been a “routine quality inspection” of the product you recently bought. They state the product has been recalled or does not meet their standards. They will tell you there is no need to return the product, and you will receive a full refund. All you need to do is request your money back by clicking a link.

Surprise… There is no refund. This is a phishing scam created to steal money or personal information.

To avoid scams like this:

  • Don’t click links in unexpected texts – and don’t respond to them. Do you think the message is legit? Contact the company using a phone number, email, or website you know is real – not the information from the text.
  • Check your Amazon account. If you are worried, log in through the Amazon website or app – don’t use the link in the text – to see if there’s a problem with or recall on any product you have purchased.
  • Send unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM) or your phone’s “report junk” option. Once you have reported it, delete the message.
